Girl Power

Today, in my seventh hour class, I saw something that prompted me to think of writing something to encourage girls. Seventh hour is the last class of the day, and a girl picked up a purple binder and a blue one. She then attempted to give the blue one to a boy standing across from her. He said, “why don’t you just carry it.”

“Why?” She asked him.

“Because you’re already holding yours,” he replied.

I couldn’t believe what I had just heard so I took that opportunity to say, “rude!” The girl told me that it was ok because he was her boyfriend. I told them both that because they were dating didn’t give him the right to be rude. I also said that he should be the one carrying her book. They got a bit defensive, but they had no good excuses.

I was a saddened by this. Girls, we need to stand up for ourselves, not rudely, but we can’t let them walk all over us. When I need some empowerment, I like to listen to music. Not any kind of music, but to a band called Superchick. Their songs are all about girl empowerment. Check them out and be empowered.

We can encourage others as well. I liked this idea that I actually saw on Superchick’s website. It was a website that encouraged people to write inspiring notes and stick them in public places. I thought that was a great idea! Encourage someone today. Get a sticky note, write something encouraging, and post it on a bathroom mirror, locker, under a desk, in the hall, or any other public place you can come up with. Be creative. It’s fun for you, and for the person that sees it. Maybe if some of us do this we could save a life. Give it a try 🙂
